Benalla is a small regional town in the High Country north-eastern region of Victoria, situated on the banks of the Broken River. The thriving community is located about 10 km (130 miles) north east of Melbourne. Local industries include tourism, grazing and agriculture, forestry, agricultural support services. There is also a medium density fibreboard factory, an ammunition factory and aviation, especially a thriving gliding centre. Benalla is located about 40 km has heritage links to the famous bushranger Ned Kelly. Local attractions for visitors include: The Benalla Regional Art Gallery, the Botanic Gardens, Costume and Pioneer Museum and Visitor Information Centre, which provides information about what to see and do in Benalla and district. Popular local events include the Benalla Festival in March and the Benalla Agricultural and Pastoral Show in October. There are more than 50 major contemporary murals along the famous Benalla CBD Street Art trail, with other art in local villages inlcuding Goorambat. The annual Wall to Wall Street Art Festival showcasing this street art has been held since 2015, usually during the week before Easter each year. The Wall to Wall Festival also includes live music, markets, workshops, artist talks, street art tours and more. Local cultural facilities include the art gallery and the Benalla Performing Arts and Convention Centre which includes a cinema and theatre. The Rose Festival is another annual festival which dates from 1967. Now called "The Benalla Festival" it is held over the first two weekends in November with dozens of free and low cost events including Music by the Lake and fireworks, the community Street Parade, and A Day in the Gardens Market held in the Benalla Botanical Gardens. see Benalla Festival. Benalla has a horse racing club, the Benalla Racing Club, which schedules around eleven race meetings a year including the Benalla Cup meeting in early October. Golfers play at the Benalla Golf Club on Mansfield Road.Benalla is also the closest major centre to Winton Motor Raceway, a privately owned motor racing circuit which holds motor racing event at all levels of domestic competition, including V8 Supercar. Benalla is home to the Gliding Club of Victoria at the State Gliding Centre located on the Benalla airfield. This club is the longest continuous operating gliding club in Australia and has played host for the World Gliding Competition in 1987 and 2016. Many of the club's members travel from Europe each summer to enjoy the warm weather and ideal soaring conditions of the region.
