Coalcliff is a tiny picturesque vacation village and holiday spot situated on an inclined hillside, in the Illawarra Region located about 25 km from Wollongong and 10 km north of Thirroul. Coalcliff lies enclosed between the sea and the stunning cliffs of the Illawarra escarpment, which provided a beautiful backdrop to the magnificent beaches and coastal landscapes in this area. Nearby is the stunning Sea Cliff Bridge, which runs along the coastline extending out over the ocean because of the extreme and steep terrain. Coalcliff has a surf life-saving club, railway station, an attractive sandy beach, delightful rock pools for swimming located off Paterson Road, change rooms, and a charming grassed reserve with playground, and a parking area for visitors wanting to enjoy the views from the bridge.
Angling is very popular from the rocks, rugged headlands, sandy beaches and in the ocean offshore. The main Coalcliff Beach faces south-east and is about 600 m long. It lies to the north of an extensive rock platform that includes several delightful rock pools. At the northern end of the beach is another narrow sandy beach, with a backdrop of 45 m high vertical cliffs. The beaches at Coalcliff are excellent for swimming, fishing, sea kayaking and surfing.
