What's on in Dunolly

Dunolly is located about 180 km north-west of Melbourne and 50 km west of Bendigo. Dunolly lies in spectacular and dramatic bushland setting at the heart of one of the most famous historic goldfields areas in Victoria. The three small towns of Moliagul, Dunolly, and Tarangull, comprise the famous area known as the 'Golden Triangle', in the Central Goldfields Region of Victoria surrounding Bendigo and Ballarat. During the late 1800's gold rush the area around Dunolly yielded more gold nuggets than any other area throughout Australia. The famous the `Welcome Stranger` nugget, which is one of the largest gold nuggets ever found in the world was found near Moliagul in 1869. It contained about 69 kg of pure gold. You can see a replica of this famous nugget at the Dunolly Goldfields Historical and Arts Museum. Many people try their luck by searching for gold in the Dunolly area. You can hire metal detectors, gold pans and other prospecting equipment at the Dunolly store, which will also offer advice and maps. Dunolly has its own community Hotel, but the focus for entertainment is nearby Bendigo that boasts a wide range of live entertainment and wonderful live theatre facilities and venues.
