Echunga is a thriving and interesting town situated about 35 km south-east of Adelaide in the Adelaide Hills Region, South Australia. Echunga started life in the 1840s and the town bloomed when gold was discovered in 1852, when Echunga became the first proclaimed goldfield in South Australia. The fascinating Jupiter Creek Heritage Trail showcases the gold rush days that took place in the area and the life at that time. The trail includes visits to the New Phoenix Tunnel, which is 80 m deep, and to other mining relics and various other old gold mining shafts. Echunga also has a wonderful heritage walk that help visitors understand the heritage of the town.
