Eltham is one of the outer suburbs of Melbourne that showcases the unique undeveloped environments in the Yarra Valley, just 50 km North-East of the Melbourne CBD. Eltham is famous as an artist's retreat and support centre. Eltham lies is the gateway to the Yarra Valley and there are many local attractions, including easy access to the outstanding Eltham wine region with its large array of stunning cellar door outlets. There are many mountain and bush walking trails in the forest and nature reserves in the area. The Eltham Heritage Trail follows a 5 km circuit around many of the local landmarks including the Montsalvat Arts Complex, where music and art are showcased via a wonderful array of annual festivals and exhibitions. The popular Eltham jazz festival is held in January, and there is a popular poetry festival as well. Community art and craft is on display at the Eltham Community Art and Craft Market held on the third Sunday of every month, in the Alistair Knox Gardens . Eltham is renowned as the historic home of the famous Heidelberg School of outstanding landscape painters. The Local community continues to attract artists who work, live and exhibit their art here.
