The Mornington Peninsula Region, now part of Melbourne, consists of Southern and Eastern shoreline of Port Phillip Bay, south of Melbourne. It also includes the Western Shore of Western Port. The district extends from Frankston, on the outskirts of Melbourne, all along the coast to Portsea and Cape Schanck,at the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. It includes the port side beach suburbs of many towns which have back beaches on the ocean side of the penensula: Rye, Blairgowrie, Rosebud, Sorrento, Portsea and many other towns on the south-eastern shores of Port Phillip. The Mornington Peninsula has been a favourite for traditional beachfront holidays for the people of Melbourne for over 100 years. There is a wonderful combination excellent boating, sailing, and fishing in Port Phillip May and surfing on the patrolled Bass Strait 'back' beaches. There is also sheltered swimming beaches on Port Phillip Bay side of the Peninsula. The region includes Mornington Peninsula National Park with its scenic walking tracks along the coast.
