What's on in Upper Ferntree Gully, Victoria


Upper Ferntree Gully is a delightful tourist town and daytrip destination, located in the forest covered hills below the Dandenong Ranges in the Yarra River Region, about 35 km east of Melbourne. Upper Ferntree Gully lies adjacent to the southern section of Dandenong Ranges National Park and the natural environment of the hills and forests provides the focus for much of the outdoor recreation in the area. The combination of rich volcanic soils and higher rainfall in the hills provide fertile land that supports lush forest and fern covered gullies. The area abounds in diverse local produce which you can taste and buy from roadside stalls and farmers markets dotted throughout the area. The local Ferntree Gully Park, which is part of the Dandenong Ranges National Park, has the Parks Victoria`s Education Centre. This park is renowned for the '1,000 steps', which is a challenging walk and also commemorates the Kokoda Trail (linking with World War II battle site of the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea). There is a shopping centre in Upper Ferntree Gully that boasts a range of cafes, art and craft shops, restaurants, wineries and delighful local produce outlets. The Farmers Market held every weekend in the carpark at the Upper Fern Tree Gully railway station, is very popular. The many stalls that include locally grown vegetables and fresh fruit, jewellery, crystals, plants, a range of food, arts and craft stalls and bric-a-brac.
