The tourist township and service centre of Balranald is situated in the Murray Region of New South Wales on the Sturt Highway, close to the spot where the road crosses over the beautiful Murrumbidgee River. The town is located in the mallee plains and flat saltbush landscape area, about 850 km west of Sydney. Balranald is a rural supply and shopping centre for the surrounding horticulture, viticulture, irrigation and tourism industries. Balranald is renowned as one of the heritage settlement at the downstream end of the Murrumbidgee River catchment. Its historic records date back to the era of the paddle steamers and river ports in the years prior to 1850. The modern township of Balranald is proud of its heritage and is the gateway to Mungo National Park, which was the first National Park in Australia to be granted World Heritage Listing. The Mungo National Park is centred on an ancient dry lake bed and includes wonderful scenery and attractions such as the 'Walls of China', which are crescent-shaped dunes (lunettes), extending along the ancient shore of Lake Mungo.
