Barraba is a thriving pastoral, pulse and agricultural service centre, located in the New England Region of New South Wales, North-West of Sydney on the Manilla River. It is situated about 90 km from Tamworth, and 480 km north-west of Sydney and can be reached by travelling along the famous Fossickers Way which is a tourist route that recognises the gold and gemstones that can be found in the area. In the late 1800`s a gold rush was triggered by discoveries in the surrounding area at Woodsreef, Ironbark Creek and nearby Crow Mountain. The Barraba district has a wonderful variety of attractions, amusements and activities to suit every taste, ranging from bushwalking and exploring at Mount Kaputar, an ancient and long extinct volcano, fossicking for gold and gemstones and enjoying the fabulous fishing, canoeing, boating, kayaking, camping and a variety of other water-based recreation opportunities at Split Rock Dam.
