Branxton, a small rural service town and tourism centre on the New England Highway situated about 20 km north-west of Maitland and 23km south-east of Singleton. To the north are the picturesque mountains and all the bushwalking and other delights of the Barrington Tops area. Branxton is located about 170 km north of Sydney, and is recognised as the northern gateway to the Hunter Valley vineyards and is recognised as the Branxton Wine district. The local Kirkton property is famous as a pioneer of the Hunter Valley wine industry. About 300 vines were planted by James Busby on the property in the early 1830s, amongst the first in the area. Branxton is a wonderful base to stay with some delightful bed and breakfast accommodation and many other options. From this base visitors can explore the wineries,
vineyards and farms on the surrounding rolling hills. There are several winery trails and tours available.
