The delightful rural community and holiday centre of Canowindra is located in the Central West Region of New South Wales beside the Belubula River, about 300 km west of Sydney via Bathurst and just 30 km north of Cowra, with its wonderful array of wineries. Canowindra is the service centre for the surrounding district which produces fat lambs, lucerne, wool and wheat. It is also a major tourist hub focused on hot-air balloons, museums, fossils, gliding and astronomy. Canowindra has an international reputation as the `The Balloon Capital of Australia`, and has a record of providing more launches or balloons in Australia. Canowindra has preserved much of its fascinating heritage and many of the buildings the main street, have been classified by the National Trust. A great place to visit is the `The Age of Fishes` Museum that includes displays a fascinating display of a fossil fish collection dating back 360 million years. Visitors can book and enjoy a tour that includes digging for fossils. A great time to visit is on the long weekend in October when the annual Canowindra Springfest is staged showcasing wonderful displays of fresh district food, local wine, arts and crafts and entertainment. Cowra and Bathurst have a wide range of entertainment and amusement options including pubs, clubs, taverns, wineries and restaurants.
