What's on in Clunes


Clunes is a small Goldfield heritage town located in central Victoria, about 35 km north of Ballarat, which provides a wonderful array on entertainment opportunities and facility. It is well known as First Gold Town in Victoria and lies in the Central Goldfields tourist area that is focused on the gold rush and the history of the 1890's. The first officially recorded gold discovery was made in Clunes on 1 July 1851 by a gentleman named James Esmoud. This discovery was the catalyst for the world famous Victorian Gold Rush that attracted people from all over the world. Clunes is an outstanding example of the heritage from this era and boasts some of the best preserved heritage gold-era buildings in Australia, with more than 50 buildings having historical significance and many on the Natural Estate. Clunes is also very popular with tourist destination for the modern version of gold - wineries and wine tours. There are now more than 20 boutique wineries in the surrounding district many of which have wine tasting, cafe and restaurant facilities. Some other attractions for visitors are: # The Clunes Museum and the renowned Gold Festival that is held every year in March. #The world famous Bottle Museum that has more than 6,000 bottles in its collection with many bottles dating from the 1800's. # Mount Beckworth Scenic Reserve. Local events include: #Clunes Back to Booktown Event # The Clunes Show that is held at the Clunes Showgrounds, and features: various competitions, animal exhibitions, live entertainment, agricultural displays and a grand parade. Clunes has a visitor information centre and a set of lovely pubs and clubs that welcome visitors.
