The wine and rural township of Cowra is established in the Central West Region of New South Wales, on the banks of the Lachlan River, about 280 km west of Sydney. It a major tourist and financial centre for localized commerce including: fresh vegetables, cattle, sheep and wool, scouring and processing of wool, vineyards, wineries and wine marketing, furniture manufacturing, and diverse tourism options. Cowra is well renowned for its spectacular heritage displays, tourism amenities and natural enticements, which encompass the stunning Japanese Cultural Centre and Garden, bistros, clubs and cafes, wine makers, art galleries, craft stores, fresh food outlets and horse riding. The renowned 'Cowra Breakout' during World War II in 1944, when Japanese prisoners of war endeavoured to escape from a
local prison is remembered in various displays and exhibits. This led to the development of Cowra`s strong links with Japan showcased at the yearly Festival of Understanding. The district is gaining a fantastic reputation for its unique wine and fine food. Close by is the village of Canowindra, which is renowned for its hot-air ballooning operators, Heritage building, fabulous wine makers, boutique olive groves and a variety of orchards. The famous Age of Fishes Museum, located in nearby Canowindra, has wonderful exhibits of fish fossils more than 360 million years old.
