Culburra Beach is a charming vacation spot, in a wonderful position east of Nowra, near the mouth of the Shoalhaven and Crookhaven Rivers and close to the to the north shoreline of Jervis Bay. The town was designed by the famous architect Walter Burley Griffin, who won the competition to design Canberra. Culburra Beach has excellent recreational amenities and the small shopping centre provides most of the tourist needs and there is a large club that provides local entertainment. There are two major beaches - Culburra Beach, a protected and sheltered bay-beach the Shoalhaven River mouth, and the open Warrain Beach with Nowra Surf Club located near the northern headland. Both beaches are patrolled by lifesavers throughout the summer months. The two beaches offer a rare opportunity for visitors for find the conditions to suit their needs under various swell and wind conditions. The beaches are ideal for swimming, surf board riding, body boarding, kite and wind surfing sea kayaks, jet skis and for families outings to the beach. There is very good angling from the beaches, the rocks on the headlands and from boats in the river and estuaries and in the ocean offshore. Lake Wollumboola, that borders the southern areas of Culburra, is a waterbird sanctuary, that also provides wonderful conditions for wind surfing, canoeing and kayaking. Culburra has a full stage of sporting facilities including tennis and lawn bowls. The local Culburra Bowling and Recreation Club, the Callala RSL Club and many clubs and pubs in Nowra offer a wide range of entertainment options.
