Gympie is a major rural service centre in the Sunshine Coast hinterland on the Mary River, located about 160 km north Brisbane. Gympie is the cultural and heritage centre of the Cooloola Region and this friendly country town that welcomes visitors has all the modern conveniences. The Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum houses memorabilia from the early gold mining era, as well as displays rural, transport, showcasing military, communications and steam development. Gympie is referred to as 'Town that Saved Queensland', Gympie's proud heritage began in 1867 with the discovery of gold by prospector James Nash at the site now occupied by the Town Hall. In the middle 1800s, the colony of Queensland was facing bankruptcy caused by drought. Nash travelled down the Mary River over 5 days from
Maryborough and gathered more than 75 ounces of gold in 6 days, making his fortune. This triggered the Gympie Gold Rush that saved the Queensland economy and allowed the colony to survive.The WoodWorks Museum showcases history of the timber industry and the social history of the area. The Valley Rattler steam train provides a spectacular railway journey through the valley beginning at the Old Gympie Railway Station. The Mary Valley has a stunning landscape of rolling green pastures and many beautiful rainforest remnants. The hills are covered with a patchwork of macadamia nuts, pineapples and other tropical crops. The small township at Amamoor hosts the famous National Country Music Muster every August. The Muster, held over six days and nights in the Amamoor Forest Reserve, is the biggest
outdoor festival for country music held in Australia. Gympie's Mary St offers a wide array of pubs, bars, restaurants, cafes, and various stores with stunning 19th Century Victorian architecture. Gympie is also home to the Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival in March. The festival , held over 5 wonderful days is full of fun, inspiration, creativity and wonderful ideas.
