Katoomba is the major administrative, tourist and residential centre for the history and much loved Blue Mountains Region in the heart of New South Wales. It lies about 45 km south-east of Lithgow, and 110 km west of Sydney and has an elevation of about 1000 m above sea level. Katoomba has been a much loved vacation, weekend getaway and daytrip destination for over a 100 years. Visitors have loved its stunning scenery, lookouts and comprehensive bushwalking and mountain bike trails through the pristine forests, valleys and gorges in the Blue Mountains area. The renowned rock outcrop of the Three Sisters can be viewed from Echo Point, which is located about 2 km south of the centre of Katoomba. Visitors can also enjoy views of the Ruined Castle rock formation and Mt Solitary from the lookout at Echo Point. Visitors can take up the challenge of the The Giant Stairway all the way down to the valley floor and marvel at the delights of one of the numerous nature trails or varying length and difficulty in the valley area. Walkers will really enjoy the unique features of the area including the hanging swamps, the stunning sub-tropical rainforest habitats and the numerous stunning waterfalls in the valley. Another well liked attraction is Scenic World which includes the Scenic Skyway cable car and the Katoomba Scenic Railway. The Skyway offers a cable car trip across a section of the Jamison Valley and has wonderful views of Katoomba Falls and Orphan Rock. The township of Katoomba and the surrounding area has numerous charming inns, guest-houses, motels, bed and breakfasts and holidays houses that tou can use as a base for exploring the area. There are a wide range of entertainment options including bistros, cafes, clubs and hotels offering live music at Katoomba.
