Lake Cathie is a delightful weekend getaway and holiday destination on the Mid-North Coast, about 15 km south from Port Macquarie and just 10 north of Laurieton and is close to Bonny Hills. The large saltwater at Lake Cathie, which is the hub for many recreational activities, is the second largest estuarine coastal lagoon in NSW. The lagoon is periodically opened to the ocean, the clear warm waters are simply perfect for young children to play and swim and there are picnic facilities and barbecues along the shore. Visitors often see dolphins and whales from the northern headland. You can drive your 4WD along the huge expanse of Rainbow Beach. During the summer evenings you can drag hand nets through the shallows in the lagoon to catch prawns. The Greater Port Macquarie Visitor Information Centres is a good place to learn about all the activities and attractions in the district. There is a broad variety of amusement and entertainment venues in Port Macquarie many of which have live entertainment.
