The regional centre of Nowra is established on the shores of the magestic Shoalhaven River about 20 km inland from the sea at Shoalhaven Heads, where the river discharges to the ocean. Nowra is a premier tourist and financial centre on the South Coast and is the capital of the Shoalhaven Coast Region. There are magnificent sandy beaches at the mouth of the river including: Shoalhaven Heads (north of the outlet) and Culburra Beach (south of the outlet). The district is renowned for its estuarine, river, beach, shoreline, and rock fishing. The gateway to offshore fishing and game fishing is the angling township of Greenwell Point, which is the port used by a small prawn and fish trawler fleet. Several fishing charter boast also operate out of Greenwell Point. The large and expansive waterways of the Shoalhaven River are renowned as heaven on earth for boating. You can use your own boat, trailable yacht, a charter cruise boat or a houseboat to explore that waterways and enjoy its many attractions. The Shoalhaven River is well-known as one of the largest navigable waterways on the South Coast of New South Wales. Power boats and sailing craft can travel from its mouth for more than 50 km upstream along its sinuous meandering channels. Nowra has a broad variety of excellent to stay, cafes and bistros. It offers many attractions, facilities for a broad range of activities, recreational amenities and entertainment venues used by visitors to the Shoalhaven Coas Region. Visitors can enjoy winery tours and taste the local wines at the many cellar door outlets in the stunning Shoalhaven Coast Wine Region which is divided into three districts: Gerringong ; Berry ; Ulludulla. Close by is the Southern Highlands Wine Region which includes to three additional districts: Moss Vale ; Bowral ; Bundanoon. Nowra has fabulous sporting facilities including three golf courses, horse and dog racing tracks, a speedway and an array of excellent clubs and taverns.

Learn to sail with Callala Junior Sailing School run by volunteers. Call in at the Boat shed, boat ramp reserve, off Boorawine Street, Callala Bay on the shore of the magnificent Jervis Bay. The club has a wide range of sailboats and runs classes on most Saturdays. Low fees because of sponsors such as Revolution Sails and other businesses
