Tenterfield is a fascinating and historic rural town and tourist centre located at the northern end of the New England Highway just about 21 km from the Queensland border and its twin township of Stanthorpe. Tenterfield is located about 725 km north-east of Sydney and 275 km south of Brisbane in the New England and North West Region of New South Wales. Tenterfield is renowned as the `The Birthplace of the Nation` as in 1889 Henry Parkes gave his historic Federation speech in the Tenterfield School of Arts. This speech marked the start of the process that saw all the Australian States join to become a Federation on the 1st of January 1901. Tenterfield is now a thriving service centre for the rural communities in the district that focus on sheep, orchards, wineries, cattle, mining and tourism.
Tenterfield is a charming town that features many heritage buildings steeped in history that are worth exploring. Tenterfield is enclosed by National Parks and vineyards stretching north into the famous Queensland winery area around Stanthorpe. Some of the major events, attractions, and activities in Tenterfield include: # Strolling along the Heritage Walk to explore more than 100 preserved historic buildings # Wining and dining at one of the many fabulous vineyards in the area and enjoying wine tours for tasting the local wines# Join in with the Oracles of the Bush festival of Australian Bush culture in music, verse, song and theatre # Climbing Bald Rock, which is the biggest single granite rock in Australia # Visit the Tenterfield Saddlery, mentioned in the famous song by Peter Allen # Visiting
