Woonona is a to the north residential suburb of Wollongong and tourist location that is very popular with tourists throughout the summer months for its fabulous surfing, swimming, angling and general relaxing and enjoying the beachside setting. There is an very good rock pool on the northern rock platform beneath the headland. Volunteer Lifesavers from local club patrol the beach throughout summer months from the September school vacation until after Easter each year. There is an very good cycleway that runs along the coastline from Wollongong`s North Beach to Sandon Point. To the west of Woonona is the Woronora Plateau, with an average height of 400 m above the suburb, and to the east fis the renowned Illawarra Escarpment. There is a sharp drop from the slender coastal plain to the coastal
strip and the Pacific Ocean in the east. The escarpment is vheavily forested and provides excellent bushwalking and rock climbing. Woonona has a delightful patrolled beach and a prominent rock outcrop and rock platform known as Collins Rocks. There is a beautiful 50 m salt water swimming pool in this area, that has replaced the old rock pool. The Wollongong to Thirroul Bike Track extends along the beachfront park. The name 'Woonona' is derived from an Aboriginal phrase meaning `Place of juvenile wallabies`. There is a broad variety of amusement and amusements in Wollongong.
