The Illawarra Region lies on the South Coast of New South Wales and is centred on the major regional centre of Wollongong. It extends from the southern boundary of the Royal National Park, south of Sydney an township of Stawell Park, south along the coastal strip below the escarpment. It includes Wollongong, Port Kembla, Lake Illawarra and the townships north of the Shoalhaven River such as Berry, Gerroa, Gerringong and Seven Mile Beach. The region offers spectacular scenery and is dominated by the dramatic Eastern Escarpment which drops spectacularly to the narrow coastal strip of beaches and inlets, particularly north of Wollongong. The cliffs and rainforest on top of the escarpment abut the yellow sandy beaches, the chocolate brown shales of the headlands and are fringed by the beautiful
blue Pacific ocean. The brown headlands, green pastures, yellow sands and sparkling blue ocean are a particularly unique scenic feature near Kiama and Shellharbour. There are many fabulous beaches in the region and a wide range of beachfront accommodation at townships such as Gerroa, Gerringong, Shellharbour and Kiama. There are also many smaller secluded beaches dotted along the coastline that are very popular with locals, holiday makes and tourists. Surfing, fishing, sailing and boating are all very popular pastimes in this area. There are a wide range of attractions and wonderful recreational facilities supporting a huge range of holiday and recreational activities in this area.
